Dr. Jewell retired from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta, in 2009 with the rank of Professor Emeritus.  The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has named a medical museum in his honor.  He was a founding member of AIDS Network of Edmonton (now HIV Edmonton) and served as its second board chair.    He also served as a member of the Alberta government’s inaugural Advisory Committee on AIDS.  He has contributed to Alberta Health Services Sexual and Gender Diversity online information page.  Openly gay for many years, he has spoken and written widely on a variety of subjects, including HIV, addictions and mental health, and aging in the GLBT community.  He has been a member of Edmonton Pride Seniors Group since its inception.
