Housing is a primary need and a basic human right. Joan is pleased to be part of this initiative focused on the unique circumstances and housing needs of Queer Seniors. Joan’s values and interests have converged in dynamic ways over 40 years of engagement in human rights, social justice, and environmental protection . Joan was a member of Alberta Status of Women Action Committee has worked in a women’s shelter, in home care contexts with special needs adults and seniors, and with wildlife at a rehabilitation centre. An avid reader, writer, and photographer, Joan recently retired from a long tenure at McBain Camera/London Drugs as a custom photographic printer where she guided many “old schoolers” through the transition from film to the digital age. Joan has been an activist for the Queer community since 1980 – as a support group leader, as Co-host with Kristy Harcourt of Gay Wire radio program on CJSR, and as a member of Womonspace. Joan participates in initiatives in support of LGBTQIA+ people with special interest on youth and seniors, encouraging others to be courageous in living their lives with integrity. Praised for her understated style and often humour, Joan’s insightful analysis of how politics and policies impact vulnerable peoples and fragile environments continues to evolve.
